Outdoor Cabinets Are a Different Animal
Indoor cabinets never face direct sun, driving rain, or 95-degree heat. Outdoor kitchen cabinets face all three, sometimes in the same afternoon. Wood cabinets built for a kitchen will warp, peel, and rot outside within a few seasons in Orlando. Outdoor cabinets need different materials, different finishes, and different construction from the ground up.
We build outdoor kitchen cabinets from stainless steel and marine-grade polymer, the same materials used on boats. They do not absorb water, they do not rust, and they stand up to Florida sun without fading or cracking. Every outdoor kitchen starts with a site visit to measure your patio, lanai, or pool deck and plan around your grill, utilities, and how you entertain.
Materials That Survive Outside
Stainless Steel
304-grade stainless steel is the standard for outdoor kitchens. It resists rust, handles heat from grills, and wipes clean. We use it for cabinet boxes, doors, and drawer fronts in full outdoor kitchens. Near salt water or pool chemicals, 316 marine-grade stainless offers extra corrosion resistance.
Marine-Grade Polymer
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) sheets, the same material as cutting boards and boat decking, make excellent outdoor cabinet boxes and doors. Polymer never absorbs water, never needs refinishing, and comes in colors that hold up to UV. It costs less than stainless and suits most residential outdoor kitchens.
What We Do Not Use Outside
We do not build outdoor cabinets from wood, plywood, or MDF, even with outdoor paint. Orlando's combination of UV, daily rain in summer, and year-round humidity destroys wood cabinets outdoors. If a contractor offers you wooden outdoor cabinets, ask how they handle the fifth summer.
Outdoor Kitchen Layouts
- Grill stations: Cabinets flanking a built-in grill with storage for tools, fuel, and serving pieces, plus heat shields where code requires.
- Prep and serving islands: Counter-height cabinets with durable tops for food prep, buffet serving, and bar seating.
- Outdoor bars: Raised bar cabinets with foot rails and room for stools, designed for the lanai or pool deck.
- Sink and cleanup zones: Weatherproof sink cabinets with outdoor-rated plumbing connections.
- Refrigeration bases: Cabinets sized for outdoor-rated fridges, ice makers, and kegerators, with ventilation built in.
- Storage walls: Tall cabinets for pool toys, outdoor dining sets, and grill covers, keeping the patio uncluttered.
Hardware and Details for Outdoor Use
Outdoor hardware must be stainless steel or marine-grade, including hinges, slides, handles, and screws. Standard hardware rusts within a year outside in Florida. We use soft-close stainless hinges and heavy-duty drawer slides rated for outdoor use. Doors get weather seals that keep driving rain out of the cabinet interiors, and we design drainage so any water that gets in flows out instead of pooling.
Countertops for Outdoor Kitchens
We coordinate with countertop fabricators for outdoor-rated surfaces. Granite, concrete, and porcelain pavers handle Florida weather well. We do not recommend laminate or butcher block outdoors. The cabinet bases are built to the fabricator's template so the top sits perfectly level and sealed.
Planning Around Florida Weather
Orlando sun is brutal on outdoor materials, so we orient doors and drawers to minimize direct afternoon exposure where the layout allows, and we recommend covered lanais over fully exposed placements when possible. Summer afternoon storms mean every outdoor cabinet needs weather seals and drainage. During hurricane season, we advise clients to secure or store loose outdoor items, and we build cabinet doors with positive latches that stay shut in high wind.
Placement matters for comfort too. We plan outdoor kitchens with shade, prevailing breeze, and distance from the grill's heat in mind, because a beautiful outdoor kitchen you never use in August is a waste.
Grills, Appliances, and Utility Planning
The cabinets are only half an outdoor kitchen; the appliances and utilities are the other half. We design around your grill choice from day one because each type needs different clearances and hookups. Built-in gas grills need a gas line and specific side and rear clearances per the manufacturer's specs. Pellet grills and electric grills need dedicated outlets. Side burners, smokers, and pizza ovens each add their own requirements.
Outdoor-rated refrigeration is worth planning early. A standard indoor mini-fridge will fail outside in Florida heat; outdoor-rated fridges and ice makers are built with sealed components and stronger insulation. We size the cabinet bases to the exact appliance models and build in the ventilation gaps the manufacturer requires.
Countertop choice affects the cabinet design too. Heavy stone tops need stronger base support than lighter surfaces, so we engineer the bases to the fabricator's specs before anything is built. The result is an outdoor kitchen where every piece fits and every utility lands exactly where it should.
We coordinate with your licensed plumber, electrician, and gas contractor on every outdoor kitchen, and we schedule our cabinet install around their rough-ins. See all of our services to pair the outdoor kitchen with indoor projects, and learn more about our team and how we work.
Utilities and Code
Outdoor kitchens need gas, water, and electrical run to the right spots. We plan the cabinet layout around your utility rough-ins and coordinate with your plumber, electrician, and gas contractor. Gas grill clearances follow manufacturer specs and local code; we build heat shields and ventilation gaps where required. Permits for outdoor kitchens vary by municipality around Orlando, and we help you understand what your project needs.
Our Outdoor Kitchen Process
We visit your patio or lanai, measure the space, and talk through how you cook and entertain outdoors. Then we draw the full layout with every cabinet, appliance cutout, and utility location. After approval, we fabricate the stainless or polymer cabinets and install them in two to four days, coordinated with your countertop and utility contractors. Most outdoor kitchen projects take 8 to 12 weeks from drawings to completion.
What Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets Cost
Outdoor kitchen cabinets in the Orlando area commonly range from $8,000 to $30,000, depending on size, material, and appliances. A polymer grill station with storage cabinets sits near the lower end; a full stainless outdoor kitchen with island, bar, sink base, and refrigeration sits near the upper end. Appliances, countertops, and utility work are usually separate. Every project differs, so these are starting points. The written quote after we visit your patio is the real number. More pricing context is in our Orlando cabinet cost guide.
